Physicals

School Sports Physicals Near Me | A PATTERN Medical Clinic

There are many benefits to being both physically and mentally active! Engaging in sports is also a fantastic way to connect with others and develop leadership as well as teamwork skills. A PATTERN Medical Clinic’s goal is to help you be ready to ‘play hard’ by offering sports physicals.

A Pre-participation physical examination (PPE) is most commonly referred to as a ‘Sports Physical’. In most states, children and teenagers are required to have a PPE administered before they participate in a new sport or before the beginning of a new season. While in some instances a PPE is not required, physicians would recommend a physical, for the continued safety of yourself and or your child.

What do I need to know before my appointment?

  • We only offer physicals for patients 18 months and older
  • We require patients to bring any required forms necessary to document your visit (i.e. completed health and immunization history)
  • If you have any pre-existing heart problems or conditions, please bring any documentation from your previous treating physician stating the condition does not prohibit you from participating in sports.
  • A PATTERN Medical Clinic will only verify immunizations with appropriate documentation showing vaccination history.

Annual Physicals near me | A PATTERN Medical Clinic

It is extremely important to have you annual physical — also known as a Preventative Care Visit or Yearly Check-up– . At A PATTERN Medical Clinic our goal is to get you to optimal health and yearly check-ups are a necessary part of that.

There are two major parts to any physical:

  1. Medical History
  2. Physical Exam

Medical History

This part of the exam covers:

  • Allergies to medication, food, or insect bites
  • Any chest pain or discomfort
  • Any current illness or previous illness when you were younger (asthma, diabetic issues, epilepsy or seizures)
  • Any medicines that you regularly take. This includes both prescription and non-prescription medications, natural or herbal supplements.
  • Earlier hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Difficulty breathing when working out or exercising
  • Family history of any serious illnesses
  • Frequent headaches
  • Heart problems (murmur or irregular heart beat)
  • Liver or kidney problems
  • Loss of consciousness, dizziness or fainting spells.
  • Mental health (depression, anxiety, perfectionism, stress, and attention deficits)
  • Previous injuries (broken bones, sprains/strains, dislocations, concussions)

Most healthcare providers can agree that a patient’s’ medical history is one of the most crucial facets of any physical. A PATTERN Medical Clinic strongly advises adolescent patients to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This is essential to help answer the medical history questions because many children may not remember or know their entire individual or family’s medical history.

Physical examination

After concluding the medical history portion of the exam, the physician or health care provider will usually perform the following:

  • Check your muscle strength and flexibility, posture, joints
  • Depending on the child’s age the provider may check cholesterol, hemoglobin count, and perform a urinalysis
  • Examine your heart, lungs, abdominal area, ears, nose, and throat
  • Perform vision and hearing tests
  • Record your height as well as weight
  • Test for hernia
  • Test your blood pressure and check your pulse

Our providers will ask you additional questions about your social history, which includes dietary supplement, alcohol,  drugs (legal and illegal) use. This may include questions regarding the use of weight-loss supplements, steroids and/or other performance enhancers since these can impact an individual’s health.
